Imagine waking up, rushing to get to school for an 8 AM class so that I could sleep. That was my first mistake: Thinking that I could stay up most of the night and not pay for it the next day.
Hello! It was almost as if I were paying to sleep. I failed that class-- not just once but twice until finally, a little light bulb went off in my head. I thought, “Let me see what happens if I start to apply myself a little bit. First I visited the tutoring center to get a little extra help. Next, I began to talk to the professor and become more engaged in class. Lastly, if I understood or felt overwhelmed by the topic we were covering, I would see if there additional material my professor could help me with. This was one of those turning point moments in my life: a major stepping stone which took place at Richland College in Dallas, TX. I earned my undergrad degree and now I’m working on my Master’s.
Think how much further you could get in your life if you make the decision to apply yourself. If we’re being completely honest, when do you believe that there’s something that you say you truly won’t allow anything to keep you from getting it? Why should you not view your goals like that? I have three principles for you:
Believe in yourself.
First, you have to start believing that you can get to where you want to get or achieve what you are seeking because if you never believe, then psychologically your mind won’t allow you to put the physical action behind it. Marathon runners start with slow pacing training by running a shorter distance and then the more they run, the further their threshold increases. So start off applying yourself towards what you are seeking, slowly each day. I If you keep on showing up and get 1% better day after day, you’ll be 30% better at the end of the month and 365% better at the end of the year. But you gotta start slow.
Continuing to put forth more effort than the day before creates a habit of self-improvement. You have now almost transformed into a machine. As you continue to pick up steam you can briefly look back to where you were and those previous goals that you set for yourself to see how far you have come and now you have superseded what you even thought possible.
Believe in yourself.
After I began to apply myself and implement what I just shared with you, I started to see and accomplish some things that I never could have imagined. On February 11, 2017, I was honored to be in collaboration with the Dallas Independent School District during the Teen Board Life Project event where they shared with me that my book, PROCESS would be added into 40 local high school libraries around the city. This was something that I could have never imagined, but it was all made possible because I believed, applied, and then superseded. So wake up friends!
I want to challenge each and every one of my fellow millennials and students. Don’t sleep your dreams away. You were called to be so much greater than a sleepy head. ;-)
